Governor General of Canada Visits the North

The Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson was in Northern British Columbia in October. Her itinerary had her in Prince George and with the University of Northern British Columbia before flying into Terrace and then to the Nass Valley.

On arriving in Terrace on October 7, the Queen’s representative was welcomed by Kitselas Chieftan Satzan (Mel Bevan) and Chief Councillor Glenn Bennett to the traditional territories of the Kitselas First Nation Kitsumkalum Hereditary Chiefs and Council representatives joined Kitselas to welcome the Governor General and wish her safe passage through each of their territories.  Kitselas Dancers and youth performed welcome and honour songs and dance for the distinguished visitor.

As part of her discussion and comments to Terrace Mayor and Council and the local First Nations leadership, the Governor General pointed out her awareness of the poor economic climate in Northwestern BC and the need for people to work together to overcome the tough times.

She also spoke to the importance of Treaty Making in BC, which was part of her reason for this historic visit.  When Adrienne Clarkson was appointed Governor General, the first bill she signed was to give Royal Ascent to the Nisga'a Treaty. In doing so, she committed to the Nisga'a Lisims Government that she would visit their homelands and the people of the Nass Valley. Following her arrival in Terrace, she spent several days meeting with the Nisga'a Nation on their homelands.
