What is the Northwest Tribal Treaty Group?

The NWTT Group is an association of First Nations and Tribal Groups in Northern British Columbia. The traditional territory of our members extends from Haida Gwaii to beyond Prince George and into the lower area of the Yukon. Our primary purpose is to review and work to improve the BCTC treaty process and to work on common issues together.

Background

On February 11, 1991 the founding Northwest Tribal Treaty was signed in the city of Prince Rupert, B.C. That agreement, which continues to be the foundation of our efforts was once again brought forward in late 1999 and early 2000 with a revived interest in cooperation and sharing between First Nations in the North. At meetings held that period, it became clear there was a common desire for the First Nations to come together to review and discuss common issues such as:

• Cooperation and information exchange amongst ourselves,

• Treaty making,

• Common resources,

• Planning and problem solving
